REVISE 👉 Ch- 5 (PLANT WORLD)
Read the chapter from TB and WB (Exercise)
IMPORTANT POINTS TO REVISE
1. TREES
- Trees are big, tall and strong plants.
- Trees have thick, brown and woody stem called trunk.
- Trees have many branches that bear leaves, flowers and fruits.
- Trees usually live for many years.
- Examples of trees - Neem, Pine, Peepal, Coconut, Mango, Banyan etc.
2. SHRUBS
- Shrubs are small to medium - sized woody plants.
- Shrubs are smaller than trees.
- Shrubs have hard but thin, brown and woody stems.
- Their branches grow close to the ground.
- Examples- Rose, Hibiscus, Tulsi, Cotton, Jasmine etc.
Herbs are very small and weak plants. They have thin, green and soft stems.
Examples include Mint, Coriander, Spinach, Rosemary etc.
3. HERBS
- Herbs have tender and flexible stems that grow very close to the ground.
OR
- Herbs are very small and weak plants.
- They have thin, green and soft stems that grow very close to the ground.
- Examples- Mint, Coriander, Spinach, Rosemary etc.
4. CLIMBERS
- Climbers are plants with weak stems.
- They cannot stand straight on their own and need support to grow.
- Climbers grow along nearby trees, sticks or walls, fences or buildings etc.
- Examples- Grapevine, Money Plant, Bean etc.
PARTS OF THE PLANT
roots, stem, branches, leaf, flowers, fruits, bud.
The root system.
5. The part of the plant which is underground is called the root. Roots have fine hair, called root hair on them.
6. Roots are mainly of two types- taproots and fibrous roots.
7. Plants which have a thick main root with small roots growing from its sides are called taproot. Examples- cotton, bean and pea.
8. Some plants have fibrous roots, which are branched. In these plants, many thin roots start growing from the base of the stem. They grow in a bunch. Examples- wheat, grass and onion.
- Roots absorb water and minerals from the soil. If the roots are damaged he plant will not able to get water and it will die.
- The water and the minerals are used by plants to prepare food.
- Roots hold the plant firmly in the soil.
- Some roots store food within them.
- Plants such as carrot and beetroot store the extra food prepared by the plants in their roots.
10. The roots of the banyan tree hang from the branches. These roots are called aerial roots and they provide support to the heavy branches.
11. The part of a plant which grow above the ground is called the shoot. The shoot or stem of a plant bears leaves, flowers, buds and fruits.
Stem
The stem supports the plant above the ground.
It connects the roots to the other parts of plants- such as leaves, buds and fruits.
Plants may have stems that are strong or weak; woody or soft; or green or brown.
12. All the different kinds of stems perform the same functions.
13. The leaves uses sunlight, water and carbon dioxide to prepare food in the presence of chlorophyll. This process is called photosynthesis.
Functions of the stem
- The stem bears branches, leaves, flowers and fruits.
- It carries water and minerals from roots to the other parts of plants.
- It carries food made by the leaves of all parts of the plant.
- The stem of some plants are modified to store food- Example- sugarcane, potato, ginger and garlic.
PHOTOSYNTHESIS
The leaves use sunlight, water and carbon dioxide with the help of chlorophyll to prepare food. This process is called photosynthesis.
14. The leaf prepares food for the whole plant. Therefore, it
is called the food factory of the plant.
15. The flat and the broad part of a leaf is called the
leaf blade or lamina. The leaf blade has many
pores on its underside. These are called the stomata.
16. Air enters a plant through the stomata.
17. The green colour of the leaves is due to chlorophyll.
18. Veins provide support to the plant and help in transporting water and nutrients.
19. Green plants take in carbon dioxide from the air and give out oxygen during the process of making food.
20. Leaves of some plants also store food. Example- Spinach, Lettuce, Cabbage.
21. Uses of leaves
- Some leaves are eaten as vegetables.
- Banana leaves are used to serve food.
- Neem and Tulsi leaves have medicinal value.
- Betel leaves(paan) help to remove bad breath.
- Eucalyptus leaves are used to treat cough, cold or blocked nose.
22. Leaf motifs- Leaf motifs are made on clothes, walls pots etc. with the help of fabric colours.
23. The autumn season is also known as ‘fall’ because nearly all the leaves fall from the trees at that time.
