IMPORTANT POINTS TO REVISE
1. Flowers-When a plant grows to its full size, it starts producing flowers. Flowers can be of different colours, sizes and shapes. A flower slowly changes into a fruit over time.
2. Functions of flowers
- Flowers are colourful and have a sweet smell to attract insects, animals and birds. They make the plant look attractive.
- In many plants, flowers change into fruits which contain seeds and help the plant to reproduce.
- Some flowers can be eaten. Examples- Cauliflower and broccoli.
3. Functions of fruits
- The fruit protects the seed inside it.
- Seeds from the fruit give rise to new plants.
The banana plant is one of the largest herb on the earth.
4. Seeds
- The seed contain baby plants in them
- The seed grows into a new plant if it gets enough water, air and warmth.
- The seedling grows into a new plant.
- Many seeds as peanuts, maize and beans are eaten as food.
5. Uses of plants
- Plants give us oxygen, which all living things need to survive.
- They clean the air and help to reduce pollution.
- Plants produce food for all other living organisms.
- Plants also help in reducing the noise pollution, hence trees are planted near hospitals and school premises.
- Dead plants are used to make manure.
- Wood comes from plants – trees provide us with timber and firewood.
- Furniture like tables, chairs, windows, doors, etc. is made of wood.
- Oil is extracted from seeds of some plants. Example-sunflower oil, groundnut oil, mustard oil, almond oil and coconut oil.
- Perfumes are made from the flowers of some plants. Example- rose, jasmine, lavender etc.
- Many seeds and fruits from plants are eaten as food.
