   IMPORTANT POINTS TO REVISE

1. There are three main types of soil- sandy soil, loamy soil and clayey soil.

2. All the three types of soils -
    (i) look different
     (ii) feel different
(iii) have different water- holding capacity.

3. Texture and appearance
Sandy soil- It is granular soil that contains small rocks and mineral particles.

Loamy soil- It is composed of sand, silt and clay.

Clayey soil- It is a finely grained soil.  This soil is heavy because of the small size of the particles.

4. Water holding capacity
Sandy soil- This soil very little water.

Loamy soil- This soil can hold some amount of water.

Clayey soil- This soil can hold lots of water.

5.  Uses
Sandy soil- It is used for construction and growing vegetables.

Loamy soil- It is used for gardening  and agriculture.

Clayey soil- It is used to make earthen pots and toys. It also has medicinal properties.

6. Soil erosion- When the top fertile layer of the soil is washed away by the natural forces like water or wind, it is called soil erosion.
7. Deforestation and overgrazing by cattle plays a part in soil erosion.

8.Crops cannot grow in an area where the soil has been eroded and this affects the life of people living in that region.

9. Soil conservation- Stopping the loss of soil caused by soil erosion is called soil conservation.

10. Afforestation and keeping a check on overgrazing are some of the methods of soil conservation.
